Autism has long been considered a condition that predominantly affects males. The DSM-5 reports a ratio of diagnoses between males and females of 4:1. More recent research and the experiences of autistic women suggest that the true ratio is less skewed. Current procedures fail to detect autism in many women until later in life, if at all. A meta-analysis of research before 2011 assumes a ratio of 3:1. This is an area of active research with multiple hypotheses. There are adaptations to correctly diagnose autism in women.
