Supermarket-style scanners can track medical devices safely and easily. A BBC investigation in November 2025 highlighted ongoing problems in the use and monitoring of medical implants within the NHS. Readily available technology has the potential to revolutionize the identification and recall of faulty devices, but is not being implemented quickly enough in the NHS. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has focused on implantable devices. The review concluded that 21st century healthcare needs a digital record of every person, product and location for every implanted device instead of paper records. All of the review's recommendations were accepted. An independent team of expert advisors proposed solutions.
