Utah has launched a pilot program with Doctronic, which uses artificial intelligence to autonomously renew prescriptions for about 190 common medications for patients with chronic conditions[1][2][3]. The program began in December and is limited to routine renewals for 30, 60 or 90 days, with no pain medication, ADHD or injections[2][3][4]. Doctronic's AI system matches the doctors' treatment plan in 99.2% of 500 reviewed emergency care cases[2][4]. The system performs clinical reviews, escalates uncertain cases to a physician, and physicians review the first 250 prescriptions in each drug class[3][4][5]. The firm carries AI liability insurance at the same level as a doctor and charges $4 per renewal[2][4]. The FDA has not yet taken a position and considers it a matter outside of its regulation, although the program is testing its authority over clinical AI products[1][2]. Doctronic is negotiating to expand to the states of Texas, Arizona and Missouri[2][6]. The program has medical oversight and safety mechanisms to improve access to medicines[3][5].
