After frequent doubts about the safety of cholesterol-lowering drugs before the statin era, statins have been the subject of various concerns and alarming reports. In the 1990s, statins were thought to promote serious nonvascular outcomes such as cancer. A Scandinavian survival study of simvastatin (4S) showed a reduction in all-cause mortality in patients with coronary artery disease. Several large clinical studies have linked cholesterol to these concerns. Product labels downplay the safety of statin therapy according to evidence from randomized controlled trials.
