Scientists have created the first complete map of mutations in a key cancer gene, showing how hundreds of changes affect tumor growth.[1] They tested every possible mutation in the critical hotspot and found 705 recurrent mutations in the genome of cancer patients.[1] Some mutations barely enhance cancer signals, while others greatly enhance them.[1] The map accurately predicts cancer behavior in tissues based on patient data.[1] The genome of tumor cells contains an average of 4 to 5 mutations controlling tumor growth.[1] About 100 of the 705 mutations are located outside the protein-coding regions of the genome.[1] In 5 percent of cases, no mutations were found, which may be related to the limits of the technique or biological factors.[1] The analysis included samples from 38 types of cancer.[1]
