Noise pollution in hospitals affects the health of both patients and staff. An informative review by Razai and colleagues highlights the need for an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. Most articles focus on traffic noise, but hospital noise should also be addressed. Noise in the hospital environment aggravates the health problems of patients and reduces the performance of staff. Sound levels in many hospitals exceed the WHO indoor guidelines of 45 A-weighted decibels (dBA) in approximately 99% of cases, including intensive care units. In addition to sleep, noise also affects the occurrence of delirium. A study showed that earplugs significantly reduced the risk of delirium in intensive care unit patients. Nurses turn up the volume to facilitate communication.
