A large retrospective cohort study investigated the relationship between cataract surgery and the development of the wet form of age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). The results of the study showed that cataract surgery was not associated with the neovascular form of AMD. This conclusion also applied to patients who had already been diagnosed with a dry form of AMD before surgery. The study thus contributes to the ongoing debate about the safety of cataract surgery in the context of the risk of developing wet AMD. The findings suggest that cataract surgery alone is not a risk factor for developing this serious eye disease. The research provides important information for ophthalmologists and patients when making surgical decisions.
