Skiing's governing body has dismissed as "wild rumours" reports that ski jumpers are getting injections to enlarge their groin area ahead of the Winter Olympics.[1] The German newspaper Bild reported that jumpers apply hyaluronic acid to the penis to achieve a larger girth and thus a looser suit.[2][3] Before the season, body parameters are measured with a 3D scanner, which determines the lowest point of the genitals and allows the size of the overalls fabric in the crotch.[1] A study in the journal Frontiers found that increasing the girth of a suit by 2 cm reduces drag by 4% and increases lift by 5%, which can extend a jump by nearly 6 meters.[2] The rules allow a tolerance of 2 to 4 cm for overalls, for men an increase in the height of the crotch by 3 cm.[3] The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will look into the information, although it is the first time they have heard of such a method and direct evidence is lacking.[2][3] Hyaluronic acid injection can bring temporary optical enlargement, but it carries health risks and the effect lasts up to 18 months.[1][3]
