In the US, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation's largest anti-hunger program, serves more than 40 million people and is facing unprecedented cuts. In July 2025, lawmakers passed the One Big Beautiful Bill (H.R. 1), which will cut SNAP funding by $186 billion over the next decade, the steepest cuts in the program's history. About 4 million people are expected to lose SNAP benefits or experience a reduction in monthly benefits. The reduction of SNAP benefits after the end of the emergency allocations from the COVID-19 era led to a sharp increase in food insecurity. However, the clinical consequences of these large cuts are unknown.[1][5]
