China criticized the United States for withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO). China's representative on the WHO's executive board said countries should not prioritize domestic politics over international law. He described the withdrawal of the US as a complex and sensitive matter and proposed modifications to WHO's rules on changing membership for greater fairness and transparency. The US formally ended its membership of the WHO on January 22, 2026 after nearly 78 years. According to the US, the reason is the incorrect handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, including a delayed response and criticism of measures such as the travel ban. The US will default on at least $278 million in debt in contributions for 2024 and 2025, plus hundreds of millions more in voluntary contributions. China expressed support for the WHO and highlighted its contributions to global cooperation against the pandemic. The WHO expresses regret over the US decision, which, according to it, threatens the security of the US and the world.[1][2][6]
