Dr. John Stevenson Bynon Jr., 66, director of abdominal organ transplantation and surgical director of liver transplantation at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, was charged with falsifying the medical records of five patients.[1][2][3] These false records made patients ineligible for organ donation through the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) list.[1][2][4] The indictment includes five counts of making false statements in the healthcare industry, handed up by a grand jury on January 14, 2026.[2][3][6] Bynon surrendered to federal authorities and was arraigned on February 5, 2026, where a judge set a bail of $2 million in cash or his house.[1][3][5] Of the five patients, three died: one was ineligible for 149 days and died in February 2024, the second for 69 days and died in December 2023 during surgery, the third two days after entry of false criteria in December 2023.[2] Two patients received liver transplants at other hospitals after the false records were discovered.[2][3] Unaware of the falsification, the patients, families, and medical team remained unfit for months and received Medicare-paid care.[2][4][5] If convicted, he faces up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each count.[3][4][5]
