The 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina are being held without the strict COVID lockdowns that have marked previous Olympics.[3] Instead of enforced quarantines, teams implemented preventive measures to protect athletes from infections.[3] Despite this, norovirus, which causes stomach and intestinal problems, appeared at the games and affected several hockey teams.[1][5] The Swiss women's hockey players did not participate in the opening ceremony because one of the players had a confirmed norovirus infection and the team was isolated.[5] The Finnish women's ice hockey team had nine players in isolation at the time of the opening ceremony, and their game against Canada was rescheduled for February 12.[5] Teams implemented increased disinfection measures and informed athletes about proper behavior when infection is suspected.[1][4] Doctors stress that norovirus is not as dramatic as COVID-19, but precautions are being taken.[4]
