Obesity is associated with many noncommunicable diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, various cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases, and some cancers.[1] Obesity also has harmful psychosocial consequences caused by societal attitudes, leading to stigmatization and discrimination.[1] In the past, the contribution of obesity to communicable diseases was considered smaller.[1] However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, obesity and its comorbidities appear to be an important risk factor for a severe course of the infection.[1][2] Obesity increases the risk of serious infectious diseases by 70 percent.[3] Severe obesity increases the risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome, ICU admission, intubation, and mortality in patients with COVID-19.[2] Obese adults have longer viral loads, lower vaccination efficacy, and altered immune function, increasing susceptibility to infections.[2] These factors create a mutually reinforcing burden of obesity and infection.[1]
