Researchers analyzed data from approximately 155,000 people from 23 large randomized clinical trials with a follow-up period of at least two years[2]. They found that statins are not the cause of muscle pain in 9 out of 10 people who experience these symptoms while taking the drug[2]. Statin therapy caused only a 7% relative increase in muscle pain or weakness compared to placebo[2]. This means that only about one in 15 patient reports of muscle problems are actually caused by statins[2]. The analysis thus suggests that warnings on product labels may be overly cautious and may not reflect the actual risk of adverse effects in common practice[2].
