Salman Waqar, an academic general practitioner and former president of the British Islamic Medical Association, says that for many doctors, Ramadan fasting is not another burden, but a deeply grounding experience. Entering work with intention from dawn brings a peaceful feeling. Approaching Ramadan as something to "squeeze through" is not helpful. A planned approach to a series of difficult changes is better, the more planning, the smoother the process. Start the preparation a few weeks before Ramadan. Gradually reducing caffeine helps to avoid headaches in the first week. For new health problems or changes in medication use, consider early consultation with a general practitioner or occupational health. If possible, avoid accumulating long days or heavy emergency services.
