Exercise is as effective in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety as drugs or psychological interventions.[1][2] A systematic review with meta-meta-analysis included 97 reviews and 1039 trials with 128,119 participants.[1] Shorter, higher-intensity exercise such as walking, running, yoga, weight training, pilates, or tai chi works best.[1][4] The study showed moderate reductions in depression with walking or running (Hedges' g -0.62), yoga (g -0.55), and strength training (g -0.49).[4] Effects are proportional to intensity and apply to various populations, including people with chronic conditions.[2][4] Yoga and strength training are best tolerated.[4] Physical activity should be considered as a primary treatment along with psychotherapy and antidepressants.[4]
