The production, distribution, dispensing and disposal of pharmaceutical products contribute to environmental pollution and long-term health risks to the public. Pharmacists play a central role in mitigating these risks through safe medicines management, patient counseling and promoting sustainable practices in collaboration with doctors and other professionals. Improper production and disposal of drugs contaminates soil and water, leading to antimicrobial resistance and ecological disturbances. Active pharmaceutical ingredients are detected in natural waters, biota and drinking water. Incorporating environmental sustainability into pharmaceutical education is essential to prepare pharmacists for these challenges. Future pharmacists will thus develop competences in the principles of green chemistry, control and optimization of medicines, formula management and advice on safe disposal. Several global initiatives emphasize the practical need for such education. Pharmacists thus act as both guardians of patients' health and stewards of the environment.
