Scientists from the University of Geneva have revealed how tumors turn the immune system to their advantage. Neutrophils, which normally protect against infections, are reprogrammed inside tumors and instead of fighting cancer, they promote its growth. These immune cells start producing the CCL3 molecule in the tumor environment. This molecule actively promotes tumor progression. The research thus shows a surprising mechanism by which neutrophils change their role to benefit cancer.[1][2]
