American skier Lindsey Vonn (age 41) suffered a compound fracture of the tibia in her left leg after falling in the Olympic downhill at the 2026 Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo.[1][3][4] The crash occurred on February 8 shortly after the start, about 12 seconds into the ride, when she lost control after a jump and caught a goal.[1][3][4] She had previously tore the ACL in the same knee at Crans-Montana on January 30, but competed with a leg brace.[1][2][5] Vonn stated that her previous injuries were unrelated to the fall and that she is in stable condition.[1][3][4] After the fall, she was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Cortina d'Ampezzo and then to Treviso in an intensive care unit, where her life is not in danger.[1][3][4] She has already undergone two surgeries and the fracture will require multiple procedures to heal properly.[3][4] Vonn has no regrets and considers the start a victory.[1]
