The US government has added a chatbot called Grok, owned by Elon Musk's company xAI, to the realfood.gov website.[1] The tool is designed to help parents and consumers get answers about nutrition with a simple click.[1] When asked if the new food pyramid is supported by quality research, Grok says that many nutritionists and organizations have expressed concerns about the quality of the evidence and the process of creating it.[1] While Grok confirms that recommendations to limit added sugar and ultra-processed foods are supported by research, he says the emphasis on saturated fat and animal protein contradicts long-term evidence.[1] When asked about nutrition during pregnancy, Grok recommends folic acid at 400–800 mcg per day, but fails to mention that medical organizations specifically recommend that pregnant women take folic acid supplements to prevent birth defects, rather than relying on food alone.[1] Grokú's placement on a government website raised questions about how the chatbot was trained for a government context and whether users should consider its responses as government recommendations.[2]
