Traditional Chinese mind-body exercises such as Tai Chi, Baduanjin, Liuzijue and Yijin Jing have been shown to be effective adjuncts in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A meta-analysis of five international databases found that these exercises significantly improved lung function – increasing forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) by 0.20 liters and forced vital capacity (FVC) by 0.22 liters compared with usual care. Walking capacity improved by 42 meters in the 6-minute walk test. The patients' quality of life improved significantly - SGRQ scores decreased by 13.76 points, CAT by 2.62 points and mMRC by 0.50 points. Subgroup analysis revealed that Liuzijue and Yijinjing produced the greatest improvement in lung function, while Tai Chi led to the most significant improvement in exercise endurance. No serious adverse events were reported in the studies. These practices, which focus on controlled breathing and mindfulness, can be a safe and cost-effective adjunct to structured rehabilitation programs for patients with COPD.
