Taking antidepressants during pregnancy can have fatal consequences for the fetus, including birth defects, although it relieves the mother[1]. Recent research shows that the risk of certain conditions rises from 1-2 cases per 1000 births in the general population to 5 cases per 1000 births in women taking antidepressants[1]. The risk is higher when administered at an advanced stage of pregnancy[1]. Untreated depressive disorder poses a more serious risk to the fetus than treatment with antidepressants[2][5]. Exposure to antidepressants may increase the risk of postpartum adjustment disorder in the newborn[2]. Studies do not show that most antidepressants have teratogenic potential or significantly increase the risk of pregnancy complications or impaired fetal development[2]. Sertraline, citalopram and escitalopram in the lowest effective doses are recommended as first choices[4]. To prevent withdrawal syndrome, it is recommended to stop antidepressants 1-2 weeks before the planned birth[3].
