The mass starvation in Gaza has challenged the definition and measurement of famine. On 22 August 2025, the Famine Control Committee of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) decided that the food situation in Gaza Governorate had reached phase 5: famine. This situation followed repeated warnings from humanitarian organizations and health professionals. Deaths from hunger and acute malnutrition among children skyrocketed. The reason was the Israeli government's actions against humanity in Gaza, including actions against the people of Gaza. The article brings historical perspectives to the reassessment of the current classification of famine.[1]
