A systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials involving 2017 postoperative cancer patients evaluated the efficacy of transcutaneous electrical stimulation of acupuncture points (TEAS). TEAS significantly reduced postoperative pain scores by VAS or NRS (SMD = -1.19, 95% CI: -1.42 to -0.95, p < 0.00001) based on 13 studies. The incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) was reduced (RR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.37 to 0.61, p < 0.00001) according to 11 studies. Postoperative nausea decreased significantly (RR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.22 to 0.49, p < 0.00001) based on 4 studies. Postoperative vomiting showed a decreasing trend without statistical significance (RR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.44 to 1.09, p = 0.11) according to another 4 studies. TEAS is an effective adjunctive intervention to alleviate postoperative pain and nausea in cancer patients. The authors recommend further high-quality multicenter studies to confirm long-term efficacy and standardize protocols.
