India has overtaken the US in the number of clinical trials, but faces regulatory challenges. According to data from the World Health Organization, about 27,000 new clinical trials were registered in India from January 2024 to June 2025, a 50% increase from 2023. India thus hosted 23% of all clinical trials in the world, ranking second only to China, ahead of the US. The Central Medicines Control Organization (CDSCO) is working with pharmaceutical company Roche on phase 3 and 4 trials in 10 government hospitals, including training staff as investigators and ethics committee members. The American company Bristol Myers Squibb has invested USD 100 million in the early stages of drug development from 2024. These facts point to India's growing attractiveness despite regulatory challenges.
