This vegan diet cut insulin use by nearly 30% in type 1 diabetes

A low-fat vegan diet without calorie or carbohydrate restriction reduced daily insulin use in people with type 1 diabetes by 28%, equivalent to 12.1 units per day.[1][2][3] This study is a secondary analysis of a 12-week randomized clinical trial from 2024, published in BMC Nutrition.[1][3] Participants on a vegan diet (n=29) experienced a decrease in total insulin dose of 12.1 units per day (p=0.007), while the portion-controlled group (n=29) had no significant change.[3] Insulin costs in the vegan group decreased by 27%, or $1.08 per day (p=0.003), versus no change in the control group.[1][2][3] The reduction in insulin requirements probably reflects improved insulin sensitivity.[1][2] Additionally, the original 2024 study reported an average weight loss of 11 pounds (about 5 kg), improvements in glycemic control, cholesterol levels, and kidney function in the vegan group.[1][2][5] The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov under NCT04944316.[3]
