Cedars-Sinai scientists have discovered a repair system in the spinal cord. Special support cells called astrocytes, located far from the injury, spring into action after spinal cord damage. These astrocytes distant from the lesion transmit the CCN1 protein signal. This signal reprograms the immune cells to effectively clean the fatty nerves. The discovery could open up new treatment options for paralysis, stroke and diseases like multiple sclerosis.
