European venture capital firms have formed the European Life Sciences Coalition (ELSC) in partnership with Invest Europe to strengthen the life sciences and biotechnology investment environment.[2][4] The aim is to mobilize public and private investment, thereby addressing concerns about the weakening financing of the sector.[2][4] Coalition members manage over €24 billion in life sciences-specific funds and have invested in or helped found over 1,400 companies in the industry.[2][4] The initiative responds to structural obstacles such as untapped private savings, fragmented capital markets, a declining number of dedicated venture capital firms and slow regulatory processes.[2][4] These factors limit access to capital for growth and force promising firms to seek financing outside the EU.[4] ELSC focuses on three priorities: unlocking institutional capital through regulatory change, building globally competitive life sciences funds, and better understanding the sector's potential.[2] The coalition works with politicians to achieve a fundamental change in the deployment of European capital without applying for subsidies.[2][4] The sector supports around 29 million jobs in the EU and is key to drug development.[4]
