Both the UK and US governments have pledged to phase out animal research and replace it with modern scientific alternatives.[1][3] However, animal testing is not foolproof – up to 93% of experiments successfully tested on animals eventually turn out to be inapplicable to humans, and more than 90% of drugs shown to be safe in animals fail clinical trials in humans.[1] There are already dozens of alternative testing methods, including ex vivo tests on isolated human tissues, that could replace animals.[1] The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plans to gradually replace animal testing with more advanced scientific methods by 2035.[1] The UK expects to end testing the potency of Botox on mice by 2027.[3] China no longer requires animal testing for imported cosmetics from May 2021.[1] The European citizens' initiative Save Cruelty Free Cosmetics has received the support of more than 1.4 million citizens of the Union, who demand an end to animal testing.[5]
