As of 2021, the Afghan health system is severely weakened by economic collapse and lack of funding.[1] Policies limiting women's participation in health and humanitarian work further deteriorate the capacity of health services.[1] The growing population of returnees places an additional burden on already overburdened health facilities and workers.[1] The health system faces a chronic shortage of qualified health care providers, especially women.[1] More than three quarters of the population have access to primary health care services, but significant gaps remain.[1] Trauma care and trauma-related health problems are among the most important challenges facing the country.[1] The situation is complicated by the lack of security and pervasive poverty.[1]
