Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital ended their nearly 30-year partnership in September 2023 when Dana-Farber made a surprise announcement that it would partner with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center to build a new $1.68 billion cancer hospital[1][2]. Dana-Farber attributed the split to a difference in future visions—she wanted to build a separate oncology hospital, while Brigham planned to integrate oncology care into its general hospitals[1]. Brigham learned of the decision through a leak, not directly from Dana-Farber, which shocked the medical community.[1][2] The split will be phased in until 2028, when their current contract expires[2][3]. Mass General Brigham, the parent organization of the Brigham, has decided to respond with its own investment plan - investing $400 million in its new Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute and plans to expand cancer services[3][4]. At the same time, Mass General Brigham was revealed to be lobbying against the Dana-Farber project, arguing that it was unnecessary and too large.[5]
