A planned doubling of medical school places in England to 15,000 by 2031-32 is under threat. The government refuses to commit to this goal. The number of students admitted in 2025-26 and 2026-27 falls well short of the planned increase trajectory. The target was set out by then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in the NHS's long-term workforce plan in 2023. Experts told The BMJ that the NHS workforce target was unlikely to be met by the new government. The plan will quietly target a reduced number.
