A January 2026 University at Buffalo study examined the effect of cannabis-based beverages on alcohol consumption.[1] Research participants who consumed cannabis beverages reported that they reduced their weekly alcohol intake from an average of 7.02 drinks to 3.35 drinks.[1] Almost two-thirds of respondents (62.6%) reported that they either reduced (61.5%) or stopped drinking alcohol altogether (1.1%) after starting to consume cannabis-based beverages.[1] Respondents also reported less frequent heavy drinking compared to the period before consuming cannabis beverages.[1] The majority of participants (89.5%) consumed cannabis beverages with a CBD content of 10 mg or less.[1] Researchers hypothesize that cannabis beverages may be more effective in reducing alcohol consumption than other forms of cannabis because they are consumed in similar ways and in similar social situations as alcoholic beverages.[1] The findings suggest that cannabis-based drinks could be an alternative for people who want to wean themselves off alcohol.
