Scientists in China have developed a breakthrough way to mass-produce cancer-fighting NK cells in the lab. From the umbilical cord blood, they created early-stage stem cells that generate 14 million highly effective NK cells. This process is more efficient than modifying mature NK cells. Among the cells produced are versions equipped with CAR technology to target specific types of cancer. NK cells are among the first defenders of the immune system and attack foreign cells, including cancer cells. Genetic modification allows CAR-NK cells to accurately recognize tumor proteins on the surface of cancer cells.
