In January 2026, 21-month-old Jasper experienced one week of high fevers of up to 103°F, was inactive, and barely ate or drank.[1] This year's flu season in Serbia and other parts of Europe started about four weeks earlier than in previous years.[1] Influenza in Serbia has crossed the epidemic threshold and the number of sick people is still increasing.[1] The current strain of the A(H3N2) virus, dubbed the "superflu," is more contagious due to seven mutations in June.[1] Humans do not have built up immunity against this strain, which puts a strain on healthcare systems.[1] According to the WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Henri Kluge, small genetic changes are the cause of this season's difference.[1] In Slovakia, the incidence of acute respiratory diseases, including influenza, increased in the first calendar week of 2026, most in the Bratislava region.[1] In this week, 35 new cases of influenza were processed in Slovakia with a morbidity rate of 0.65 per 100,000 inhabitants.[2]
