Community health workers (CHWs) play a key role in filling the health workforce gaps in sub-Saharan Africa. However, they remain undercompensated. The authors of the article, Temesgen Ayehu and colleagues discuss the removal of spiritual workers. These measures are intended to free up funds for the proper payment of CHW. They also propose a reform of the health system in the region. The goal is to optimize resources in CHW programs. They plan to integrate CHW into civil service programs.
