Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pledged to take action to regulate ultra-processed foods in response to a petition by former FDA chief David Kessler.[1] The FDA is considering revoking the safety status of dozens of processed carbohydrates, such as corn syrup and other sweeteners, unless manufacturers can demonstrate that they do not contribute to obesity and chronic disease.[1] Kennedy criticizes the 1958 system, which allows companies to assess ingredient safety without proper government oversight.[1] The United States is about to publish new nutritional recommendations that could change the eating habits of the entire country and are expected to affect both school lunches and meals in the military.[3] The new guidelines should focus on limiting saturated fat and ultra-processed foods.[3] However, Kennedy emphasizes that the goal is not to regulate ultra-processed foods, but to ensure that everyone understands what they are consuming.[6] The administration identified ultra-processed foods as one of the factors in the epidemic of chronic diseases in children in the US.[2]
