The study evaluated changes in choroidal thickness and volume after uncomplicated cataract surgery in 41 patients (42 eyes, mean age 70.2 ± 8.7 years, 51.2% male) using EDI-OCT over 3 months. Measurements took place before the operation and 1 day, 1 month, 3 months after the procedure in the sectors of the ETDRS grid. There was a significant increase in choroidal thickness and volume in almost all sectors, with a maximum at 1 month after surgery (p ≤ 0.05), followed by a decrease, but no return to the original level. 5 eyes (11.9%) developed cystoid macular edema. Structural changes were comparable in patients with and without edema. Patients with other ocular or systemic diseases, complications or poor image quality were excluded. The data come from an original prospective study at the Department of Ophthalmology in Graz (2016–2017).
