STAT won its fourth Polk Award in five years for documenting the Trump administration's impact on healthcare, scientific research and public health.[1] The Trump administration has fired thousands of health professionals from key agencies, including the CDC and FDA, leading to the departure of prominent scientists in the fields of cancer research and drug oversight.[1] FDA staff charged with evaluating medical preparations reported problems with meeting deadlines.[1] The administration abruptly cut nearly $2 billion in mental health and addiction programs, affecting 2,706 grants.[6] Among the canceled projects was a $15 million-a-year grant to the Opioid Response Network, which provided education and training for substance abuse prevention and treatment programs.[6] At the same time, the Trump administration fired almost half of the members of the United States' elite epidemiological program.[5]
