A staggering 840 million women and adolescent girls worldwide have experienced physical violence, sexual violence, or both by an intimate partner or sexual violence by a non-partner at least once in their lifetime. This number has hardly changed over the past two decades. In 2023, 263 million women aged 15 and over were sexually assaulted by men other than their partners at least once in their lifetime. This form of violence is defined in surveys in such a way that the estimate is highly likely to be underestimated. The article is a commentary on the topic of eliminating violence against women.
