The long lists of adverse effects of statins in the Summaries of Product Characteristics (SmPC) are mainly based on non-randomized and unblinded studies, which may be biased. The Cholesterol Treatments Trials Collaboration performed a meta-analysis of individual participant data from randomized control trials with more than 100,000 participants and 19 studies. Besides the well-known risks of muscle symptoms and diabetes, the only other adverse effects were a slightly increased risk of abnormal liver function tests, changes in urine composition, and edema. They found no increased risk of cognitive impairment, depression, sleep disorders, or sexual dysfunction. These findings are published in the journal Lancet (doi:10.1016/S0140-6736(25)01578-8). Despite the reassuring safety results, there is still a large group of people who cannot or do not want to take statins.
