ECDC and EFSA published an assessment of a rapid outbreak following the recall of infant formula products due to the detection of cereulide. Due to the recall, the current likelihood of exposure to contaminated food is low. Product recalls are happening globally in European countries and beyond. Cereulide is a toxin that causes sudden nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain 30 minutes to 6 hours after consumption. In younger infants, it can disrupt the salt balance in the body and lead to dehydration. Negative health effects are low to moderate, with newborns and infants under 6 months more susceptible to serious illness. ECDC reports of diarrhea in infants after consumption of recalled products, but no serious cases; in one case the infant tested positive for the toxin, vomiting and diarrhea with full recovery. EFSA has established an acute reference dose (ARfD) for cereulide in infants and consumption values: 260 ml/kg body weight for initial infant formula and 140 ml/kg for follow-on formula (usually from 16 weeks).[](https://www.kojeni.cz/novinky/efsa-poskytuje-rychle-hodnoceni-rizik-pri-uzivani-cereulidu-v-kojenecke-vyzive/)[](https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/news-events/precautionary-global-recall-infant-nutrition-products-following-detection-bacillus)[] (https://www.efsa.europa.eu/en/news/precautionary-global-recall-infant-nutrition-products-following-detection-bacillus-cereus)[](https://www.mpsr.sk/efsa-poskytuje-rychle-posudenie-rizika-cereulidu-v-dojcenskéj-vyziva/526-40-526-20104/?ver=fullversion)
