Pakistani MPs are debating fears of "corruption" in the UK's £40.5m overseas training program for NHS doctors. Last month, the BMJ revealed that the program at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust was scrapped after an independent review revealed red flags. The audit found failures to ensure fair payments for international training (ITF) and evidence that most participants, mainly recruited from Pakistan, did not return to their home countries. A key issue was the routing of ITF payments through a third party. UHB, after a review, confirmed the severance of ties with the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP), which had been supplying most of the more than 700 ITFs since 2017. The High Commission calls for urgent action.
