John Whyte, MD, MPH, became the new Executive Vice President and CEO of the American Medical Association (AMA) in July 2025, succeeding James L. Madara, MD, whose 14-year term ended on June 30.[1][2][3] The AMA is a 178-year-old organization whose membership has grown by more than 33 percent under Madaru's leadership to exceed 290,000 physicians and medical students in 2024.[2] Whyte is a board-certified internal medicine physician with nearly 30 years of experience, a graduate of Hahnemann University School of Medicine and Harvard School of Public Health.[2][3] Prior to joining the AMA, he served as Chief Medical Officer of WebMD since 2018, where he expanded strategic partnerships and helped transform the platform into an interactive wellness hub.[1][2][3] He previously served as a senior medical expert at the Discovery Channel and at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), where he shaped the nation's Medicare coverage decision processes.[6] AMA Chairman Michael Suk, MD, called him an exceptionally qualified leader with a deep understanding of the AMA's mission.[1][2][3] Whyte stated that he is honored to join the AMA and sees opportunities to strengthen its role in promoting medicine and public health.[1][3]
