Young UK doctors face six-figure student debt and a lifetime of repayments in a 'broken' system. According to the BMA, doctors lose 10% of their income over their working life. Some doctors regret studying medicine because of these loans. Callum Parr, deputy chairman of the BMA Doctor's Committee, has a £200,000 debt, which has risen from an original £90,000 despite repayments. He comes from a working-class background, went to state school and, as the first doctor in his family, borrowed £120,000. He pays off the debt for the next three decades. He stated that if he had known what he knows now, he would not have made the same decision. The BMA warns that doctors may never own a house or have children.
