A UN investigative mission has said that atrocities committed by the Rapid Support Force (RSF) paramilitary forces in western Sudan during the siege of the town of El Fasher have "signs of genocide". The RSF carried out targeted killings, sexual violence, starvation, torture and "indiscriminate abuse" of communities in the Darfur region. These forces acted with the intention of destroying the Zaghawa and Fur communities in El Fasher in whole or in part, said mission member Mona Rishmawi. The conflict in Sudan escalated in 2023 as the RSF and the Sudan National Army intensified their battle for control of the country. As of April 2023, 150,000 people have been killed and 14 million displaced. Sudan has been plagued by war for two decades.
