Women in Wisconsin will be eligible for expanded Medicaid coverage for up to a year after giving birth, instead of the current two months.[2][3] The law passed the state assembly on February 19, 2026 by a vote of 95 to 1, making Wisconsin the 49th state to enact the expansion.[2][3] Only MP Shae Sortwell voted against.[3] The House already passed the bill almost unanimously last year, and it now goes to Governor Tony Evers, who is expected to sign it by the end of February, for his signature.[2][3] The expansion will allow low-income mothers with incomes above the poverty level to remain in Medicaid for 365 days after their pregnancy ends.[2][4] Pregnant women in Wisconsin are eligible for Medicaid with annual incomes up to 306% of the federal poverty level, but until now they lost it 60 days after giving birth.[3] The law requires approval from the federal Department of Health.[4]
