Eric Dane, the actor known for the role of Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy, died on Thursday, February 19, 2026, aged 53.[1][2][3] He succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), an incurable neurodegenerative disease that gradually paralyzes muscles.[1][2][3] He was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025, which means he died 10 months after its publication.[1][2][3] The family confirmed that he spent his last days surrounded by his wife Rebecca Gayheart and daughters Billie and Georgia.[3][4][6] He appeared in 139 episodes of Grey's Anatomy as a plastic surgeon nicknamed McSteamy.[1] He most recently played Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, filming in a wheelchair, and took on the role of a firefighter with ALS in Brilliant Minds.[1][2] Dane has been active in the fight against ALS as a board member of Target ALS.[2][4]
