The goal of breast cancer screening is to detect cancer as early as possible to reduce mortality and morbidity from treatment. Mammography is less sensitive in women with dense breast tissue. These women have higher rates of interval cancers and more advanced stages at diagnosis. Women with dense breasts derive a smaller reduction in breast cancer mortality from screening mammography compared to women with non-dense breasts. Complementary ultrasound screening reduces advanced breast cancers.
