[Perspectives] Adnan Hyder: reinvigorating public health

Adnan Ali Hyder is Dean and Robert A. Knox Professor at Boston University School of Public Health in the US.[1] He was born in Karachi, Pakistan into a family with a long tradition of medicine – his maternal ancestors practiced Unani medicine for 11 generations and called themselves hakims, while his paternal ancestors were doctors for three to four generations.[2] Hyder is recognized among the world's top experts in health systems and policy.[1] During his more than 25-year career, he has worked to improve health in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.[1] He was senior associate dean for research and innovation at George Washington University before joining Boston University in August 2025.[1] During his career, he directed the first center in the US devoted to the study of commercial determinants of health, and his research, supported by the National Institutes of Health, contributed to the understanding of the epidemiologic burden, risk factors, and sociocultural aspects of noncommunicable diseases and injuries worldwide.[1]
